Hyderabad floods: Colonies still under water for third day in row
HYDERABAD: Colonies in Nizampet, Alwal, Kapra, Moulali, the area behind Chikoti Gardens in Begumpet and Nacharam continued to be inundated for the third day on Saturday.
Power was not restored in over 30 apartments in Nizampet as the electricity meters located in the cellars were inundated. As many as 3,901 residents have taken ill with water-related issues despite the GHMC organising 29 medical camps in their localities.
On Saturday, four persons were injured when a house collapsed in Kapra. Twelve lakes were overflowing and 10 nalas had got blocked due to which dirty water flooded the roads. Officials evacuated 147 residents from inundated localities. The death toll due to rain across the state increased to 17.
Foxsagar
Bandari Enclave and Balaji Residency continued to be inundated. Rain over the past two days was obstructing the operation to drain water.
Quthbullapur MLA K.P. Vivekananda said: “The gram panchayat staff is still removing the water, the operation will be completed only when it stops raining.”
He said Roads No. 9 and 10 in the area were worst affected. Those living in the apartment cellars had been evacuated.
After 16 years. the water was rising at Foxsagar. Water stood at 22.5 foot, and people living downstream would have to be vacated if it crosses the 27-ft mark, he said.
Over 15 houses in Uma Maheshwar Colony were waterlogged. “We are unable to enter the colony as it is flooded and water has entered the alternative route too. We have to make arrangements through private lands,” he said.
Old Alwal
Water was still flowing on to roads in Reddy Enclave, Bharathinagar, Anand Raonagar and other colonies. Minister K.T. Rama Rao visited these colonies and announced a Rs 10-crore fund for the drainage.
The overflow of Kotha Cherruvu goes into Chinnarai Cherruvu and on its way, it covers over 10-15 colonies. These colonies are connected with narrow drains that cannot sustain the load of high intensity rain. Water was overflowing on the roads and entering houses.
Kapra, Nacharam
The low-lying areas near the outlet of Kapra lake, especially Janapriya Apartments, have been evacuated. Residents were staying in a community hall provided by the GHMC and helped by the resident welfare associations.
The compound wall of a two-storey structure near the lake collapsed and the residents were asked to vacate. In the inlet area, waterlogging has been reported.
In Nacharam, the nala continues to flow on to the roads and shops have been submerged, especially on the main road. The police barricaded the road near the overflowing Nacharam nala. Another road caved in front of a house at Sadhana VR Colony.
