Hyderabad cops to crack whip on public drinking

This ban will remain in force for a period of one week.

Hyderabad: From Tuesday onwards the Hyderabad police will ban the consumption of liquor in public places. This ban will remain in force for a period of one week.

This notification was released by city police after several complaints of drunkenness, location of wine shops near residential areas, GHMC community halls turning into gambling centers and the nuisance of alcoholics on pavements.

The law now states that “any person violating this order shall be liable for punishment under Section 188 of the IPC and as per the provisions of Hyderabad City Police Act, 1348 Fasli.”

But no decision has been made on the licences given to wine shops near residential areas, despite vociferous objections by residents.

Mr Charan Singh reported, “From Jiaguda to Puranapul there are three wine shops on the roadside. At one wine shop at Puranapul crossroads, there are vehicles parked on the road, unnecessary traffic and men drinking in public despite an available room. Why don't the police take any serious steps?”

Mr Sidharrth M Hemmadi wrote, “Suresh Wines on road no. 14 Banjara Hills, allows its customers to do what they want every day. I have been sending pictures and videos for the last two years to the police, but no action has been taken so far.”

While one citizen analyzed, “With the help of local political goons, licenses are issued to liquor outlets which are adjacent to many shops in residential areas.

After drinking, the regular customers start quarreling.” right on the road at places like Marredpally entrenchment Road and Secunderabad Cantonment Area.

Hence do place some restrictions for issuing of licenses for liquor outlets and cheap liquors, which are far worse than Narenja of Maharashtra and Goodaba packets of local Hyderabadian style.”
