KOLLAM: Manu Prasad, a student with Kerala State Institute of Design (KSID) in Kollam, has bagged the Lexus Design Awards India 2019 in the ‘student category’ for his project UNI-CAST – a resizable cast to lock elbow and twisting action of wrist as a cure for hand fractures.
Manu, hailing from Changanassery, is a third semester student with KSID. “I wanted to tackle the issues with traditional casts which include sweating problems, itchiness, dry cell accumulation, odour formation, difficulty in keeping the cast dry, hygiene issues, and neck pain. After intensive research at several hospitals, the UNI-CAST was designed,” Manu said.
UNI-CAST is a resisable cast for curing hand fractures. It avoids all the short comings of existing casting methods and is a low cost product, affordable by the common people.
The lightweight and waterproof nature of UNI-CAST offer the user tremendous convenience to use. The product is ergonomically designed as it can be used for both right as well as left hands. UNICAST is recyclable and can even be remade, leaving zero waste behind.
As an added feature, it bears an elegant yet sporty form that is much different from traditional casts and braces.
The Indian edition of Lexus Design Awards started in 2017.
Winners from the 12 categories, received Lexus Design Award India trophies designed specially by designer Michael Foley. The winners of the open and student categories will also be invited to the Lexus Design Event at the Milan Design Week 2019.
