Easter buns wow residents, tourists alike in Ooty
Ooty: Tasty Easter buns or hot cross buns bring Easter attraction to the hills this extended weekend, commencing with the Good Friday holiday. The hot cross bun, popularly known as the Easter bun here, is available only during the Easter weekend. P.K. Balakrishnan, proprietor of Lucky Bakery on Garden Road here, the bakery famous for hot cross buns, said that over the past three decades, it is only during the Easter week that his bakery bakes hot cross buns as many Christians, locals and some tourists buy this bun in good quantities during the Easter week.
“In the hot cross bun, we blend a mixture of dry fruits, raisin and spices with flour and bake it to give it its unique sweet taste. It is sold at '15 per piece. It is good to see a baking product become a famous Easter week delicacy. People buy more of them on Good Friday day and the sales go up till Easter. The bun is marked with a cross, giving it the name, hot cross bun,” he said.
Don Bosco, a Christian resident here, said that the hot cross bun is a special food during Easter week that makes one remember the last supper Christ had with his disciples. The cross on the bun signifies the crucifixion. The sweetness and other ingredients which are nutritive, signify the resurrection of Christ, he added.
