Manjeri government medical college tops MBBS results
Malappuram: Against several odds, the first batch of the Government Medical College in Manjeri emerged top in the state when the results of this year’s final year MBBS were declared by the Kerala University of Health Sciences. Of the 87 students who attended the examination, 85 passed making the college come first among several well known medical colleges in the state. The Government medical college which is one of the last established medical colleges in the state, and set up in 2013 is still in its infancy on many counts.
This academic achievement came although it has minimum infrastructural requirements mandated by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The same batch had also emerged top in the state in the first year results in 2014. Last year the MCI denied approval to admit students after the college failed to stick to MCI norms. Later, after resolving the shortcomings, the college got back the approval.
The college had also witnessed a students’ protest last year pointing out the lack of facilities and shortage of teaching staff which were resolved after government intervention. The achievement has come when the college was bracing for major infrastructural development of Rs 103 crore which has already been sanctioned by the government. The authorities say that the foundation stone will be laid within three months for the permanent students’ hostel for the college.
