Musi River aggravates mosquito woes
Hyderabad: Residents of Jiaguda, Karwan, Langarhouse, and Hashim Nagar are faced with a never-ending mosquito menace. The Musi River passing through these areas has a lot of hyacinth growth. No cleaning work is conducted, which affects the health of locals. Md Abdul Hameed, a resident of Jiaguda, said, “The municipal workers have not come to clean the hyacinth in this area for the past 15 days, and the number of mosquitoes has increased. They used to spray mosquito repellent, but that has also not happened for almost two weeks.”
Mr Kausar Mohiuddin, MLA of Karwan, said, “In the past 20 days nearly eight cases of dengue have been reported in my constituency. I have made a representation to the GHMC, and I have written a letter to the Minister of M&UD about the issue, but there has been no response from them. I have also urged them to speed up the Musi cleaning process.”
Explaining the condition of the area, the MLA said, “Most areas in Karwan constituency are neglected by the GHMC. The hyacinth used to be removed every 10-15 days by the GHMC, but it has not been cleared for the past month, because of which the water is blocked. The Kathora house near Golconda is filled with hyacinth. It used to be a source of fresh water once, but today it is neglected. It has become a breeding ground for stray animals and mosquitoes.”
Ms Hari Chandana, the Zonal Commissioner for the GHMC Central Zone, said, “We have received many complaints about the mosquito menace, and we are working to resolve the issue. The mosquito menace is not only in one area, it is around the entire Musi River. If there are some irregularities among workers, then we will take action against them. Work to remove the hyacinth from Kathora house is in progress, as we want to restore the beauty of it.” She said the GHMC workers and officials were not the only ones to blame. “Residents of the areas store water for many days. The dengue mosquito breeds in stagnant water,” she said.
