Amul-like society to promote rubber

The action plans suggested include ways to improve the quality of rubber through grading.

Kottayam: The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation has recommended the constitution of a society owned, operated and managed entirely by the farmers on the model of Amul to facilitate the procurement and production of raw rubber.

The state government had asked the KSIDC to recommend ways to revive the rubber sector and a report was submitted recently , said Mr Jose Kurian, deputy general manager of KSIDC.

The KSIDC also recommended the constitution of a company similar to Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) for taking up manufacturing issues of rubber.

The action plans suggested include ways to improve the quality of rubber through grading. “The KSIDC has suggested avoiding intermediaries for procuring and trading of rubber, as they cause loss to the farmers,” said Mr Jose Kurian.

The Amul dairy cooperative was constituted at Anand, a village in Gujarat, in 1948 to end the exploitation by middle men in procuring and selling milk.

The society, owned, operated and managed by the farmers, later emerged as a model for the entire country.
