Thanks GHMC, 2,000 dogs no more stray
Hyderabad: Around 2,000 stray pups have been adopted as part of the GHMC’s adopt-a-dog scheme under the Maa Inti Nestham initiative, said minister K.T. Rama Rao. The initiative is part of Maa Inti Nestham.
There are an estimated six lakh street dogs the GHMC area, including about 2 lakh in the north and west zones. The veterinary wing has managed to sterilise just about one lakh dogs. It also administers anti-rabies vaccination to the dogs.
In its effort to address the problem of stray dogs and involve the public, GHMC had launched an initiative under which the corporation would take care of sterilisation and vaccination of dogs, while the owners on their part would provide shelter and take care of them.
The anti-birth control and vaccination programme targets 3,000 dogs out of the 3,300 breeding dogs in the west zone. One pair of breeding stray dogs can give rise to 2,000 puppies in their lifetime.
