Telangana: Babus sit on insurance claims
Hyderabad: Despite an order of the state government in March, the transport department has not processed the accidental insurance claims for transport, non-transport, autorickshaw drivers and home guards, alleged the Telangana Auto Drivers Joint Action Committee (JAC) and Telangana Auto & Motor Welfare Association have alleged.
The families have not received aid from the government on the death of the driver. RTA officials say the GO made the labour department responsible earlier but it was later transferred to the transport commissioner without laying out guidelines. The drivers were to get an accident insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh, and the government would pay the premum.
The GO said that the labour commissioner had submitted a proposal to the government to designate the transport commissioner as master policy holder. The government instructed the transport commissioner to designate motor vehicle inspectors as the registering and claim receiving authority.
Neither of the departments have taken any action, said Mr A. Sathi Reddy, member, Telangana Auto Drivers Joint Action Committee (JAC) said. “None of the families of the drivers who passed away in road accidents have received insurance,” he said.
In the absence of guidelines as to who to approach, families are left in a limbo. Mr M. Dayanand, general secretary of the Telangana Auto & Motor Welfare Association, said, “There is a need to issue proper guidelines to process the claims as many families are suffering. The families are approaching us.” He wanted the Regional Trasport Authority to start a special desk or helpline.
Joint transport commissioner G. Mamata Prasad said said, “We have received only three claims after the GO was issued and we are working on them. We will release guidelines soon.”
