Hyderabad: Auto carrying 7 kids has sozzled driver
Hyderabad: A drunk autorickshaw driver who was carrying more schoolchildren than permitted in his vehicle was held by the Charminar traffic police on Tuesday morning. When police ran a breathalyser check, driver K Venkatesh was found with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 266 mg, which is seven times the limit.
The police made alternative arrangements to send the children to the school and detained the autorickshaw.
Charminar traffic inspector B. Saieshwar Goud said that on Tuesday morning, sub-inspector Saidulu had stopped the autorickshaw (AP11 Y 8603) near Gulzar Houz after noticing that the vehicle was carrying more children.
On checking, it was found that there were seven children in the autorickshaw. Driver Venkatesh of Falak-numa, was suspected to be intoxicated because of which the police ran the test and found his BAC at 266 mg.
The students were going to St Paul’s School at Himayat-nagar. Two separate autorickshaws were arranged to drop the children.
The inspector said that only six students are allowed to travel in an autorickshaw. A case has been registered against the driver for further investigation.
The parents of the students were called to the school and the traffic police officials went to the school to counsel them. The officials also spoke to the school authorities and asked them to counsel parents who are sending children through private transport.
Additional commissioner, traffic, Anil Kumar, said, “The Hyderabad traffic police has been carrying out a special drive since June 12 and each day around 300 people are being caught. Till now as many as 3,000 vehicles have been booked for different types of violations. Our main purpose to conduct the drive of passengers’ safety.”
