Salem smart city schemes gain pace
Salem: The steel town of Salem is in for a major facelift in the years to come with a clutch of projects with an outlay nearly Rs 944 crore under the 'Smart City' programme being expedited, said municipal commissioner R Sathish.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, he said the implementation of the schemes are broadly divided into two categories-, area-based development and pan city schemes.
Mr. Sathish said in the first phase, Rs 37.54 crore had been spent on schemes like LED lamps installation across Salem, setting up of a temporary bus station, solid waste management and buying vehicles to manage it, planting of saplings for a greener city, and monitoring of air quality over the steel town. These schemes have already been completed, he said.
In the implementation pipeline are other big schemes, said Sathish. The old bus stand building has been demolished here to give place to a new two-tier modern bus station at a cost of Rs 92.13 crore, he said.
That work is going on in full speed, he added. The solid wastes collection centre at Erumaipalayam was being modernised and made eco-friendly, while the banks of the Thirumanimuthaaru river that snakes through the town were being strengthened at a cost of Rs 13.50 crore. A Victoria commercial mall and a four-tier multi-level motor vehicles parking centre was also being constructed, he pointed out.
