IMD Sounds Red Alert for Western AP
VISAKHAPATNAM: The weather office has sounded a red alert for the ASR, NTR, Palanadu, Nandyal and Kurnool districts. It said heavy to very heavy rains are likely till Wednesday evening under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal, off the north AP-south Odisha coasts.
“The low pressure is likely to concentrate into a depression over the same region during the next 24 hours. Subsequently, it is likely to move northwestwards across north AP-south Odisha coasts,” IMD Amaravati said in its daily bulletin on Tuesday evening.
As a result, heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls is likely at isolated places over ASR, West Godavari districts of north coastal APCAP, NTR district and Palnadu of south coastal AP and Kurnool and Nandyal districts of Rayalaseema, it said.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over all the remaining districts of NCAP and over the Krishna, Guntur Bapatla and Prakasam district of SCAP. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over SPSR Nellore district of SCAP and Anantapur and YSR districts of Rayalaseema.
“During the last 24 hours, Garugubilli (Parvathipuram Manyam) received the highest rainfall of 10 cm, Ranastalam (Srikakulam) 7 cm, Tiruvuru (NTR district) 7 cm, Nuzvid (Eluru) 6 cm, Peddapuram (Kakinada) 6 cm, Palasa (Srikakulam) 5 cm, (Vizianagaram) 5 cm, Amalapuram (BR Ambedkar Konaseema) 5 cm and Kalingapatnam (Srikakulam) 5 cm.
Heavy rains lashed Visakhapatnam and the surrounding areas for the second day on Tuesday. Normal life was affected and the vendors were off the roads. Many low-lying areas were inundated and students and office-goers had a tough time reaching their homes.
Reports said Gostani received 9.8 cm of rainfall, Pendurthi 8.4 cm and Narava 8.4 cm.
