Centre allots Rs 460 crore to AP-NIT campus

At present, the institute has a total strength of students of 1,224 for the first, second and third year.

Rajahmundry: National Institute of Technology is all set to be accommodated in a permanent structure as the Centre has sanctioned about Rs 460 crore for taking up construction of buildings at Tadepalligudem in West Godavari by 2019-20.

Though the state got the educational institute in 2015, it is being run in a in a makeshift building offered by a private local engineering college and two academic years were completed and the third one is in progress at present. Lack of funds forced the authorities to run it is a private accommodation. At last, the Centre has sanctioned the much needed fund and the authorities are getting ready to take up construction of the buildings. The Central Public Works department will take up the works to develop infrastructure to the NIT by calling bids and fixing agency to execute works under its supervision.

At present, the institute has a total strength of students of 1,224 for the first, second and third year. Though the total permitted intake capacity is 480 per year, only 438 students took admission this year.

The state government has allotted 202 acres land near airfield at Tadepalligudem to set up AP-NIT campus and it had taken up construction of compound wall to secure it. About 70 teaching staff including 35 PhD holders from prestigious institutions like IIT, NIT and others is working in the college to teach students. The NIT has issued a notification recently to take up recruitment of 67 teaching staff and 73 non-teaching staff almost on a permanent basis as the Union ministry of human resources development has given a go head to it.

The AP-NIT is offering eight courses including civil, electrical, electronics, mechanical, computer, chemical, bio-technology and metallurgy at present and may offer a few more courses depending upon the demand from the students and availability of requisite infrastructure in the near future.

Resident-coordinator Prof Srinivasa Rao said, “As the Centre has sanctioned funds, we will be taking up development of permanent infrastructure to for the NIT initially with Rs 202 crore to complete the whole exercise by 2020.”
