Hyderabad: Illegal U-turns risk lives
Hyderabad: The illegal U-turn that many bikers are taking because of the feasibility it provides is putting other commuters life at risk. As these bikers slow down and squeeze-in to take the turn, unsuspecting four wheelers crash into them.
This is the situation in many parts of the city, where even a minor space left between the dividers is being misused by many bikers.
Many commuters took to twitter and expressed their grievance over the platform.
K. Raja Shekar Reddy, an employee in a private firm and also a traffic volunteer, tweeted about the illegal U-turns and called for fixing cement blocks at the medians to curb the violations near Botanical Garden in Kondapur. When this newspaper contacted him, he said, “This area mainly consists of eateries and shops from where food delivery boys pickup the order and distribute it to the customers. In a rush, they violate the traffic rules and take illegal U-turns here. Because of this, vehicles coming from Gachibowli and Kothaguda were facing inconvenience.”
Mr Azeem Khan, a resident of Gachibowli, admitted that he has taken such U-turns earlier, but he also said, “All of a sudden the U-turns are being removed by the traffic police. We don't know the reason. There was a U-turn in front of the University of Hyderabad’s small gate. One day, the police suddenly barricaded it. For another U-turn we have to travel another kilometre. Removal of legal U-turns is also a reason for such behaviour lest we need to go miles to take another turn.”
When asked about the measures that the traffic officials are taking, T. Narasinga Rao traffic inspector, Gachibowli, said, “We discussed about the issue at a meeting held recently. We decided to place a cement block of small height from where people can cross the road. Since there will be a huge evening traffic now, it will affect vehicular movement.”
