Mysuru: A month after the massive rescue operation of people stranded in the floods and landslides in Kodagu, the district administration now has a bigger task on hand : rehabilitation of the 960 people, who still remain at its nine relief centres. The administration has already identified land to provide sites and houses to the 816 families, who lost their homes in the disaster. The process of forming layouts and getting the neccessary approval for the plans and models of the houses proposed by four different companies is under way.
Speaking to DC, Kodagu Special Additional Deputy Commissioner Jagdish said the process of levelling the land for layouts was in progress and the housing department would be responsible for building the houses. “Four private companies have come up with plans. Three of them have built model houses in Madikeri. Two of the models have concrete roofs and one has a tiled roof,” he revealed, adding that while one company had offered to build a one- bed room house for Rs 6.5 lakh , another had offered to build it for Rs 6.7lakh.
A third company had proposed to build a two bedroom house for Rs 9 lakh, he said. The model for the houses and the cost involved would be finalised in consultation with district in-charge minister and other elected representatives, Mr Jagdish added.
Homeless to get Rs 10,000 monthly rental allowance
Dropping the earlier plan to construct pre-fabricated, low cost concrete houses for Kodagu flood victims, the state government has decided to pay a monthly allowances of Rs 10,000 each to the families who lost their homes.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Housing and Urban Development Minister U.T. Khader said that nearly 750 families have lost their houses due to the unprecedented rain in Kodagu. Until the government builds permanent houses for them, a monthly rental amount of Rs.10,000 will be given to each family, he said.
