Tamil Nadu: MTC chooses five bus depots to carry out major repairs
Chennai: In the wake of the recent accident at Porayur bus terminus in Nagapattinam district that killed eight people, Metropolitan Transportation Corporation (MTC) has chosen five bus depots in the city to carry major repairs within the next month. The move was initiated after Madras high court on Monday directed the transport department to inspect all the buildings under the corporation’s control.
“We got a detailed report on the major repairs at the depots from all the four zones. Tambaram, Thiruvanmiyur, Vyasarpadi, Mandaiveli and Ennore depots are identified to be dilapidated with pressing issues,” said an MTC official. The pillars are eroded and walls are almost cracking in the administrative block of Ennore bus depot. Department sources said a temporary makeshift structure would be built by Friday for the conductors to sign the attendance and show the accounts till the block is demolished and reconstructed by next month.
Washrooms at Tambaram, Thiruvanmiyur and Vyasarpadi would get a revamp by next week, the official said. “The sewer is blocked and water is stagnated in these depots. The work at Tambaram depot has already started.” At Mandaiveli bus depot, the clock tower with broken windows and cracked walls would be demolished and reconstructed. Also little repairs would be carried in the other structures of the depot.
“Almost all the depots have leaking or broken drainage pipes, which would be repaired and light cracks would be filled. Estimate for the repairs would be ready by weekend before the second round of inspection,” said an official.
