Man dies by suicide, harassment by loan app blamed

HYDERABAD: Alleged harassment by online loan app personnel claimed the life of a man in Wanaparthy district. Dasari Shekar, 32, a car driver, died by suicide at his residence on Monday night, apparently unable to withstand the pressure to repay a loan that he had taken from the app-based company.

Police found that Shekar had borrowed Rs 2,000 loan from the company. Police recovered a suicide note purportedly written by Shekar, which detailed how he was harassed by the personnel.

Shekar wrote that the personnel had warned him to repay or face dire consequences. When he could not, they created his nude pictures and circulated them to his contacts which included women.

This resulted in people calling him and his family members. Some women claimed that Shekar had deliberately sent the pictures to harass them.

Shekar said in the note that he wanted to report the harassment to the police but did not do so as he had borrowed from others near his house and they may see the complaint as an attempt to avoid repaying them too.

Shekar said he had wanted to end his life earlier, but the thought of his wife and children had stopped him. Police registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC and started investigation.
