Karnataka: 50 per cent decline in paddy cultivation area

Belagavi: In an alarming development, rice cultivation in the State has fallen to 50 per cent of the stipulated area. The fact was revealed by Agriculture Minister Mr Krishna Byre Gowda while answering a question by Bharatiya Janata Party member C.T. Ravi.

Paddy cultivation last year was taken up only in five lakh hectares of land, as against stipulated area of 11 lakh hectares, the minister said. He attributed this to the reduction in cultivation of paddy due to drought and said that farmers had taken up cultivation of alternative crops.

Even in irrigated areas like the Tunga-Bhadra tail end region, where canal water could not reach, the farmers were growing tur dal, he added.
