Hyderabad: Land dispute stalls plan for Asia's biggest bus terminal

The terminal will have a 1-lakh sq. ft passenger area, 200 bus bays, parking for 2,000 two-wheelers and 200 four-wheelers.

Hyderabad: A land dispute stands in the way of the construction of Asia’s biggest Inter City Bus Terminal to be built at Miyapur at a cost of Rs100 crore.

After the government gave the green signal, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority selected KKR Infrastructure to build the project in the public private partnership (PPP) mode.

HMDA has proposed building the terminal on 55 acres of its own land at Miyapur. But there is a dispute over the land and construction cannot start until this is resolved.

The ICBT is envisioned to provide integrated facilities to passengers, public and private bus operators and their staff. Staying facilities and amenities like restaurants and parking spaces will be provided that are cost effective and of quality.

The construction of the ICBT, 2 km from the Miyapur junction on National Highway 9, was to be completed within three years.

Hyderabad city is served by bus terminals at Imliban, Dilsukhnagar and the Jubilee bus station in Secunderabad. These terminals handle about 2.5 lakh passengers a day. But there is no major bus terminal in the western part of the city and the proposed ICBT is intended to fill this gap.

At present, to reach Imliban or Jubilee bus stations, people have to travel 10 to 15 km. Private buses are not allowed to use these bus stations but they will be allowed at the ICBT along with RTC buses.

The HMDA will give the project on an annual lease rental during the construction period of Rs 1 crore in the first year with five per cent escalation every year. The total lease period will be 33 years and in the 31st to 33rd year, HMDA will get Rs 4 crore as rent from the bidder.
