Bengaluru: Cubbon, den of vice at night Walkers petition CM, top cop
Bengaluru: It appears that quite a few problems ail the 297-acre Cubbon Park and the Walker's Association has submitted a memorandum to CM Siddaramaiah and Police Commissioner Praveen Sood with a list of demands.
“Demands include CCTVs, construction of a wall around the premises and re-imposing the vehicle ban on second Saturdays and hational holidays," the letter states. Umesh S. Kumar, president, Cubbon Park Walker's Association, who wrote it, said, “Traffic disturbs birds and environment. Moreover, the Horticulture Department is planning a night safari at the park till 1 am. It will allow drunk people from nearby areas to create a nuisance in the park."
Making a more serious allegation, he said, “The lung space turns into a den for anti-social elements at night with drug peddlers and prostitutes. Two women security guards told me that they’re scared to venture into some areas as they have seen groups of men consuming ganja.”
DC spoke to a woman guard who said, on anonymity, “Two women guards quit recently as they were scared after encountering some drunk men, who were verbally abusive." She said, “We have no power. We have the uniform, but don't have sticks like the men.”
Deputy Director Mahantesh Murgod said, “There are no such illegal activities. On vehicle movement on second Saturdays, we had a meeting with the Chief Secretary and decided to re-impose the order. It will be back to normal in a week. There has been no progress on the night tourism proposal.”
