Vijayawada: Motorists worried over roads caving in

Four roads caved in the last 3 months in VMC limits.

Vijayawada: Caving in of roads in the old city is worrying the motorists and pedestrians alike. In three months, around four incidents of roads caving in occurred in I Town and Chittinagar areas in the city. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is still probing into the reason behind the huge holes on the roads. Roads in prime areas of the old city are often caving in and forming potholes 3-4 feet deep leading to traffic snarls in the city.

Repair works taken up by the civic body are failing to stay for long. A deep hole developed on the main road near Kaleswara rao market bus stop, on Wednesday morning, has once again highlighted the poor quality works. Even the drainage works lack quality. “Huge holes on roads show the poor quality of works done by VMC. All incidents are happening in I Town area and officials are diverting the issue by blaming leaking water lines. Officials who are taking up the temporary road works are not probing into the actual reason for this. The holes in prime areas pose threat to motorists,” said CPI city secretary Donepudi Shankar.

Responding to the situation, police arranged barricades to prevent accidents. The VMC officials, who inspected the spot, are suspecting that leakage of underground sewage lines was leading to caving in of roads. “Drainage and water lines in old city areas are in a dilapidated condition and those 12-15 feet under the earth are getting leaked which are causing soil erosion in the deep layers under roads,” said an official of engineering wing of VMC.
