Visakhapatnam: Capacity of sewage treatment plants to be increased

The work will be taken up through public-private partnership (PPP) under Implementation of the Smart City Mission in Visakhapatnam.

Visakhapatnam: With about 50 per cent of the sewage being discharged to sea or in open owing to lack of sewerage system, the Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City Corporation Limited (GVSCCL) has now come up with a plan to augment the capacity of the existing sewage treatment plant (STP) by retrofitting them and also supply the treated sewage to effluent of quality for industrial use and disposal of sludge.

The existing 38 MLD STP near Lakshmi Talkies is to be augmented to 70 MLD to cater the additional diverted 25 MLD from Appu Ghar STP. GVSCCL has now invited Request for Qualification-cum-Request for Proposal. The project will be taken up through public-private partnership (PPP) on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) mode under Implementation of the Smart City Mission in Visakhapatnam.

The party has to construct, operate and maintain the project and provide services for a period of 20 years. According to scope of the project details, from Shanti Ashram and Pandurangapuram pumping station the sewage is to be diverted to the existing 38 MLD STP near Lakshmi Talkies. Concessionaire is to design develop comprehensive infrastructure.

The Area Based Developed area is spread over 7 sq. km and has population of about 80,000. The Concessionaire is to develop comprehensive sewerage network and construct the missing network and house connections with adequate sensors to monitor sewage flow within the network. The areas to be covered are Jalaripeta, East Point Colony, AU South Campus, Kirlampudi Layout, Pandurangapuram, Siripuram, Alapaty Doctors colony, Maharanipeta, Gnanapuram, Jayendra colony, Beach Road, Poorna Market road, Spring road, Old Bus Stand road, Rajaram Mohanrai road, D N Godeyvari street, Port Gymkhana Club road, Municipal stadium road, Port Main road. Rapid expansion of the city is also increasing the sewage burden. According to the urban development department, the existing sewerage capacity of the Visakhapatnam circle is 76 MLD, while the sewage to be generated in the circle by 2031 is estimated to be at 509.88 MLD.
