Hyderabad: Cops to get training in unarmed combat

Global Hospital at Lakdikapul was vandalised after death of a patient.

Hyderabad: The city police force has learnt a lesson after the Global Hospital at Lakdikapul was vandalized following the death of a female patient. Special training has been planned for the police personnel working in the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate, to train them in the techniques of unarmed combat and catching armed culprits.

In the incident at Global Hospital, the Saifabad police on Tuesday night arrested four people, including the three sons of the deceased woman Shameem Begum (50). She died while undergoing treatment at the hospital on Monday.

Central Zone DCP P Viswa Prasad said that police constable Ramchaderji, who was available at the police station initially rushed to the hospital. Subsequently, a blue colts team and patrolling personnel from Nampally and Ramgopalpet police stations also rushed to the spot.

The accused were vandalizing the hospital by breaking the furniture and glass windows and doors, when the policemen arrived. One of them was carrying a fire extinguisher and another was holding an iron rod and damaging the furniture. The lathis were kept in the car, but the policemen who went in did not carry them to control the men. However, after some time, the situation was brought under control and the accused were overpowered and taken into custody, the DCP said.

“Yes, the incident has been a learning experience for us. The policemen should have used their lathis to control the accused,” the DCP said on Wednesday.

Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar said, “The police personnel who reached the spot were carrying lathis in their vehicles, but they did not use them to bring the situation under control. Beginning January 2, 2019, special training for the police personnel of all the five zones in the city will be given. The training will include techniques on unarmed combat and to catch armed people and those who create mayhem in public. At least, 20 per cent of the force from the city would be undergoing this training at the Central Armed Reserve Headquarters.”

All the accused, identified as Mir Mohiuddin Ali Khan alias Ahmed Khan (30), Mir Barkat Ali Khan (29), Mir Sujath Ali Khan alias Mustafa Khan (18) and their brother-in-law Mohsin Khan, have been arrested by the Saifabad police and remanded to judicial custody, the Commissioner said.
