Bengaluru: Garbage dump a landmark here!
Bengaluru: It’s an irony that quite often Koramangala residents, while trying to guide relatives or friends to their homes say they stay near the garbage dumpyard in Ejipura Junction!
Though some of the prime landmarks in Koramangala such as the Regional Passport Office and National Games Village apartment complexes are the ‘neighbours’ of this dumpyard, the garbage mess created by the BBMP and its officials takes away all the attention.
For years, the corner in front of Regional Passport Office has been a major garbage dumping point. From commercial establishments such as hotels, shops to Ejipura slum-dwellers, all have found a one-point solution to their garbage 'mismanagement'.
While the junction has not only become a breeding zone for mosquitoes, garbage segregation on the footpath, which encroaches a major portion of the road, severely affects traffic movement.
Prakash Shetty, a resident who lives in the vicinity of the junction, complained, “The problems at Ejipura Junction are perennial. While closure of road every now and then for repair works affects traffic flow, the regular garbage segregation at the junction severely disturbs vehicular movement.
Shockingly, the busy junction also serves as a garbage collection point. As a result, a long queue of auto-tippers and trucks are always stationed right in front of the passport office.”
The peak hours are the worst when motorists have to navigate through garbage heaps, leftover trash and parked autos. This process halts traffic flow from Ejipura Junction up to Viveknagar.
Naveen, a commuter on this road, pointed out that even in afternoon hours when pourakarmikas segregate garbage, the traffic comes to a grinding halt.
He said, “Though the road has been recently asphalted after the completion of drainage pipeline, nothing has changed, except that potholes are less. As long as garbage is left to rot at this busy junction, traffic movement will take a beating.”
