Central govt team to visit Pondicherry for drought assessment
Puducherry: Responding to Puducherry government's plea seeking drought relief in the wake of poor monsoon, the central government has deputed a team to make an on the spot assessment beginning March 5.
The team will tour the Puducherry and Karaikkal regions for three days before heading to New Delhi to submit the report, said Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy here on Monday.
He expressed hope that the central assistance towards drought relief would be provided to the UT after the team submits its report. "The government would begin disbursing of interim relief to the affected farmers in the meantime," he said.
Puducherry government has sought Rs 100 crore from the Centre as drought relief as there was a total loss of crop in Puducherry and Karaikal following the failure of monsoon. A resolution was adopted unanimously on the floor of the Assembly on January 24 seeking relief.
The agreement between the territorial administration and Chennai Port Trust for developing the port here for cargo handling would be signed on March 1 in the presence of minister for road transport, highways and shipping Nitin Gadkari at New Delhi, said the Chief Minister.
Making the government's stand clear on the proposed hydrocarbon exploration project at Karaikal, the Chief Minister said that the territorial administration would oppose the Union government's move to have the project at Karaikkal region.
