New Delhi will soon have Rani Chennamma road, says Prabhakar Kore

Prabhakar Kore said the Delhi Development Authority had given the green signal to name a street after her.

Belagavi: Her fame has been largely confined to Karnataka, but now Rani Chennamma of Kittur, who fought the British in the early 18th century, could have a major road in the nation’s capital named after her.

Disclosing this on the occasion of Rani Chennamma’s rath yatra in her hometown of Kakti on Tuesday, Rajya Sabha MP, Prabhakar Kore said the Delhi Development Authority had given the green signal to name a street after her.

Although it had not been decided yet which of New Delhi’s road would be named after the brave queen, the city’s development authority had given its approval based on an appeal made by a group of leaders from Karnataka, he revealed.

The proposal submitted to the Delhi government also included establishing a garden in her name, according to the MP, who appeared confident that it would clear both the projects in honour of the queen.

Regretting that the Rani had not received her due despite her brave stance against the British, Mr Kore contended she would have received global recognition had she born in any other state in India and would have stood first among the brave warriors of the nation.

“But today several history books claim Jhansi Rani, Laxmibai was the first woman to wage a war against the British although she fought them 30 years after Rani Chennamma’s historic battle in Kittur,” he observed, also lamenting that her name figured in the history books brought out by the Centre only as a formality and few details were given about the historic events that took place during her rule.

Meanwhile, several leaders have now urged the government to highlight all the events and wars that took place during Rani Chennama’s rule in the history books.

They believe that the history books should be revised to give a clear picture about the important role she played in the state’s history.
