Peerzadiguda Limps Back to Normalcy, Residents Seek Permanent Solution

Hyderabad: Even an hour’s rain spells trouble to Peerzadiguda residents, who were among the worst hit areas during the October 2020 floods as well. Incessant rains of the past two days have brought back the same fear due to waterlogging in several colonies. "Water remained stagnant for more than two days before the municipal authorities stepped in and partially cleared the drains. Water was almost knee high. The water is gradually receding," said Ankur J, a resident of Krishnanagar colony.

Christopher Reddy Gattu from Rowa Colony, whose first floor was inundated in 2020, said that building a concrete compound wall last year helped stop most of the water from entering houses.

"Nevertheless, the waters were up to three feet high until late last night. Cleaning the drains and removing other debris cleared most of the water by Friday morning," he said.

According to Ramesh P, a resident of RTC Colony in Peerzadiguda, all the water that flows down from Rowa colony reaches them because of the slight slope and it takes them days to recover.

"Water entered our houses this time also but we were able to manage through the night. Our worry what if heavy rains become a daily feature in September and October. There needs to be a permanent solution to this. Evacuation is not the end-all," he said.

Vanjakshi Ch. from Venkatramana Hills said that her neighbour quickly packed up and left for their daughter's home when they heard IMD’s red alert. "They kept calling us for updates. Thankfully, the situation was a lot better this time. Our bigger worries were power cuts and loosely dangling wires," she said.
