Guntur to be metropolitan city soon
Guntur: The state government has decided to develop Guntur into a metropolitan city, said minister for civil supplies P. Pulla Rao.
Mr Rao, minister for social welfare N. Ananda Babu, district collector and Guntur municipal corporation special officer K. Sasidar and local MLAs conducted a review meeting in the GMC office on the progress of development activities in the city. The ministers said the government was taking measures for the all round development of Guntur in view of the proximity of new capital, Amaravati, with the city.
Mr Ananda Babu said Guntur will have world-class amenities in the coming days. He said that drinking water scheme and underground drainage works would be completed by next year and directed the GMC officials to complete the works soon.
Mr Pulla Rao said that proposals were prepared at an estimated cost of Rs 386 crore for the development of basic amenities in 10 villages merged with GMC on the occasion of 150 years of Guntur municipality.
He said the government will conduct the 150 years celebration of Guntur municipality in a grand manner. He said the old pipelines supplying water developed leakages and so new ones will be laid.
Mr Sasidhar said the progress of works will be reviewed every two weeks and said widening of roads and greenery would be completed as early as possible. He said that all parks and ponds in Guntur city would be developed with the cooperation of APCRDA and promised to take measures to eradicate the menace of stray dogs in the city.
The ministers presented a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to D. Yesu and Malleswari whose five-year-old son, Prem Kumar, was killed in an attack by stray dogs at Adavi Takkellapadu in Guntur city.
MLAs Md Mustafa and M. Venugopala Reddy and GMC officials participated in the review meeting.
