Chennai: 'Train 18', India's first engine-less train which was manufactured in a record time of 18 months at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) is Indian Railways' first world-class train. According to sources, the train will likely replace India's fastest Shatabdi Express and have facilities like special toilets and seats for the disabled.
'Train 18' is the first prototype, which will be modified for subsequent production based on the feedback from Lucknow-based RDSO (Research Designs and Standards Organisation). 'Train 18' will be able to achieve speeds of 160 kmph and will be propelled by an underslung propulsion system. It will have an aerodynamic driver's cabin, like the ones in an Electric Multiple at both ends.
The self-propulsion system eliminates the need for a locomotive to haul the train, hence reducing the turnaround time of the train at terminal stations. 'Train 18' is also equipped with an advanced state-of-the-art suspension system aimed at ensuring a smooth and safe journey for the passengers.
So, how will 'Train 18' run without an engine? To put it simply, 'Train 18' will be like the metro trains and EMUs that run in the city without a locomotive hauling them. However, in the case of 'Train 18', the technological evolution of the concept is more complex since it also involves the capability of running at 160 kmph.

'Train 18' will have a driving cabin at both ends, hence eliminating the need to reverse the train set, once it reaches its final destination. According to ICF officials, to whom DC spoke, the concept of distributed power train-set for a mainline express service is a new ballgame!

'Train 18' will have continuous windows for a better viewing experience. The train set will also have automatic doors with sliding boards which will open only once the train reaches the platform and is stationary. "Only when the train is completely at zero kmph will the door open and the sliding board come out," an official said.
Other prominent features of the train include; diffused LED lighting, European-style seats, disabled-friendly wheelchair parking spaces, onboard Wifi infotainment, GPS-based passenger information system, personalised reading lights, emergency talk back units for passengers, CCTVs, to name a few. Passengers with disabilities will be able to enter the driving trailer coach using their wheelchairs. It will have modular, disabled-friendly toilets that will have auto-sensor fittings.
Each train set will have 16 coaches. The train will have two classes - Executive class and second class. The executive class chairs will be fully rotatable. The train will have halogen-free rubber-on-rubber flooring
Besides 'Train' -18, ICF is also working on the design of 'Train-20'. The 'Train-20' will replace existing Rajdhani coaches. However, no timeline has been assigned for the project as of now.
