Hyderabad: The proposed 42-km-long expressway from Kismathpur to Nagole along the river Musi, taken up under the Strategic Road Development Project by the government, has been put off.
The GHMC has prepared an alternative plan for four-lane road on each side of the banks of the river. The government had proposed the project in October 2015 for improving connectivity from the eastern part of Hyderabad to the suburbs in the west. The project costs about Rs 5,000 crore. As per the master plan, the proposed expressway would also be connectivity between Outer Ring Road from Korremula to Manchirevula. The GHMC prepared the master plan based on a study done on South Korea’s longest expressway along a river having similarities with River Musi.

The GHMC received a detailed project report from a prominent consultant last year which identified 12 junctions at Nagole, Golnaka, Amberpet, Chaderghat, Puranapul, Nayapul, Muslimjung old and new bridges, Imblibun and Tippukhana for access ramps. The construction cost was estimated as Rs 100 crore per km for the 42-km expressway.
As the Korean government demolished its expressway following huge traffic jams, the GHMC cancelled its proposed expressway and instead came up with a new master plan.
GHMC mayor Bonthu Rammohan Rao told this newspaper that the expressway project was cancelled but a new project would be taken up along the 42-km stretch under the SRDP.
“As per the new proposals, we will develop four to six-lane roads along both sides of the river. One or two lanes will be given for the proposed Bus Rapid Transit System on both sides,” he said.
