Hyderabad: Traffic speed set to rise to 30 kmph after the commencement of Metro

The average traffic speed had improved due to various initiatives.

Hyderabad: The traffic speed in the city, which recently increased from 13 to 27.1 kmph, is expected to move faster after the commencement of Metro Rail services. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr V. Ravinder said, the average traffic speed had improved due to various initiatives. “We are expecting the speed will increase more after the Metro Rail in two major corridors, Nagole-Miyapur and Nagole-Hitec City. We have to study the effect of Metro Rail services on traffic after they commence.

The arrival of MMTS Phase-II will assist road authorities in controlling traffic,” he said. An official from the Road Transport Authority said there were 27 lakh vehicles in GHMC limits. “As many as 1,100 new vehicles are coming on road every day. “There is not enough road space, which is causing traffic issues. Widening roads, improving signals, closing major junctions and introducing alternative roads speeded up traffic,” he said.

Mr Puppala Srinivas, president of Road Safety Club and Medchal district transport officer, said improved traffic speeds may not impact safety. “As per studies, an accident at 30 kmph may not lead to a fatality. The average traffic speed may rise to 30 kmph after Metro services begin, he said.”
