GHMC to slap hefty fines on violators

The Corporation has fixed heavy fines against those found guilty of adding to public nuisance or causing health hazards.

Hyderabad: In what can be called as a double-edged sword, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has decided to slap exorbitant fines against violators of various kinds. On the one hand it will serve as an effective deterrent, while on the other, it will fetch additional revue to the civic body.

The Corporation has fixed heavy fines against those found guilty of adding to public nuisance or causing health hazards. At the receiving end will be those dangerously transporting construction and demolition materials and wastes and vehicles dumping such material unabashedly on the city roads.

According to the structure that has been put in place, the corporation will collect Rs 25,000 for a first-time offence, Rs 50,000 for a repeat and a whopping Rs one lakh for the third offence besides seizing the vehicle. The State Gover-nment has issued GO No 632 in this regard. Nodal agencies, including GHMC, HMDA, RTA and traffic police are empowered to penalise the violators.

That apart, the civic body has also conducted a ground-level survey and noticed that builders and owners have not taken safety precautions in their ongoing construction projects. It has come to light that builders have been not erecting blue-sheets and covers for the structure, which could help prevent dust falling on the roads, a everyday nuisance for commuters.
