Kollam Corporation drafts parking policy

The parking policy is part of special project introduced in corporations that are directly monitored by the Chief Minister.

KOLLAM: The Kollam Corporation is in the final round of shaping a parking policy for the entire city considering the day-by-day increase in vehicle population and subsequent space shortage. The Corporation will take up measures to ensure no clearance certificate is issued for buildings including commercial establishments without proper parking space.

The draft parking policy for Kollam City is under consideration of the Kollam Corporation after a survey has been conducted with the technical support of TKM College of Engineering. It has been found the highest number of vehicles which lacks proper parking space is near the Kollam railway station. The city has been divided into four sections - auditoriums, schools, commercial areas and tourist spots where studies will be conducted to introduce the policy. The project is prepared by the town planning department.

The parking policy is part of special project introduced in corporations that are directly monitored by the Chief Minister. The pilot phase was implemented in Kozhikode Corporation.

The illegal parking in various spots in the city including Railway station road, QAC road, Chinnakkada, Payikkada road, and Maharani market will be curbed after introducing the new policy.

The corporation also considers constructing parking lots in unused land areas possessed by private parties. The Alakkukuzhi area and land owned by Indian Oil Corporation in Chinnakkada have been proposed for constructing parking lots.

The draft has also pointed out narrow roads near educational institutions and using land space for other purposes in auditoriums also cause traffic congestion. Multi-level mechanised parking system, construction of parking plots, setting up of no-parking zones, single direction parking, reordering of auto-taxi stands are some of the suggestions in the draft parking policy.
