Telangana private varsities bill okayed
HYDERABAD: The Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed the Telangana State Private Universities (Establishment & Regulation) Bill, 2018, by a voice vote, amidst the Opposition walk out, paving way for setting up private universities in state for the first time.
Except the MIM, all opposition parties — the BJP, TD and the CPM — staged a walk out to protest the Bill arguing that state universities should be strengthened first instead of allowing private universities. The Bill led to the TRS and the BJP leveling allegations and counter allegations against each other in the House.
The TRS questioned as to why the BJP was opposing private universities in the state, when all other BJP-ruled states had private universities. The BJP took potshots at the TRS saying that while their MPs were obstructing Parliament demanding enhanced reservations, the TRS government had brought the Act which denies reservation to these categories in private varsities.
