Namakkal: Arrests in baby sale case go up to 8
NAMAKKAL: The district police arrested two more women, believed to be sub-brokers in the alleged racket in buying and selling babies to childless couples, on Sunday, taking the total arrests in this wider racket to eight so far.
Police said K Selvi, 29, and K Leela, 36, of Bhavani area in neighbouring Erode district were remanded to judicial custody today and so far the sale of 14 babies in this racket, going on for several years, have come to light.
The police began the investigations after an audio clip of Amudha, a retired nursing assistant of Rasipuram government hospital, purportedly negotiating with a baby-buyer in Dharmapuri district, went viral on social media.
This has led to a series of arrests including her husband and four others so far.
Police said the process of identifying the biological parents who had parted with their babies for a sum and the childless couples who purchased the babies was now on, adding, more people could be questioned in the case.
