Grace marks in CBSE draw flak

Dr Kurien said that in the moderation policy, if a student scores above 87 or so, the marks would be rounded off to 95.

Hyderabad: The CBSE did not scrap its moderation policy, which it had assured it would, leading to a large number of students scoring 95 marks and more this year as well.

Experts and teachers said that the moderation policy appeared to have been followed this year as well. Dr Lisi Kurien, a Business Studies teacher, said, “When so many students score 95, it is obvious that there has been a spike in the marks especially in English, Hindi, and Maths. Physics and Chemistry teachers have also complained about the same.”

Dr Kurien said that in the moderation policy, if a student scores above 87 or so, the marks would be rounded off to 95. She stated that it was unfair to students who secured 95 in one subject shouldn’t have to face competition from a student who scored 90.

Experts said that there have been accounts of students who have only attempted 90 marks but scored more. Ms Lakshmi Rao from Save Education said, “Students who left 5 marks said they scored 95, meaning that everything else they wrote in the paper was perfect. The policy should have been scrapped especially in light of the cutoffs in universities these days.”

The moderation policy was scrapped by CBSE following advice from a committee formed to bring equality to the grading system to ensure that results are not altered. Grace marks were to be given if a student was below the pass mark, and it must be mentioned on the answer sheet.
