AP to procure 7,000 MW solar power from SECI
VIJAYAWADA: Special chief secretary (Energy) K. Vijayanand stated that Andhra Pradesh will become number one in the power sector in the country, with the ability to export surplus power to other states.
He pointed to the state government’s Renewable Energy Export Policy 2020 under which wind and solar hybrid projects are being established to strengthen the energy sector. In addition, pumped hydro storage projects (PSP) with a capacity of around 33 GW have been planned both on the river and off-river sites. With the completion of these projects, AP will be number one in the power sector in the country, with the ability to export surplus power to other states, he underlined.
Vijayanand stated that as per directives of Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and energy minister Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy, AP government has entered into an agreement with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to procure 7,000 MW of solar power. This will help the state continue nine hours of daytime free power to agriculture for the next 25 years.
AP GENCO managing director K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu said GENCO is supplying around 102–105 million units (MUs) per day to the state grid, which is around 40–45 per cent of the total energy demand, the highest ever after the bifurcation of the state.
Chakradhar Babu informed the special chief secretary that AP GENCO is preparing an action plan for improving its financial and operational performance, which will strengthen its thermal power generating units.
