Even PMO can't touch BBMP!
Bengaluru: Bengaluru cannot get rid of its garbage problem even if the Prime Minister’s Office intervenes, it seems.
The PMO, responding to a letter from the Public Grievances Portal – an organisation working for citizens’ welfare, had stated that it had ordered the BBMP commissioner to address the problem immediately. The issue is over the space between Metro pillars 82 and 90 on the National Highway 209 in Yelachenahalli that is being used as a garbage transit point and dump yard.
Ms Sindhu Gopalakrishnan of Public Grievances Portal, in her letter to the PMO, had pointed out that the land is under litigation and in the BBMP map of 2004, it was shown as part of Yelachenahalli Lake.
After the NGO received the PMO’s response on July 24, the activists had met the BBMP assistant executive engineer and chief engineer, besides Mayor Sampath Raj.
Mr Aleem, who stays close to the spot, alleged that the property belongs to Congress leader Madhusudhan Reddy, who assured the BBMP officials that he would fence the area by July 27 and the Palike could clear garbage after that.
“Another deadline passed, but nothing happened. The garbage is being dumped at the site, as the property is under litigation. The BBMP too has not sent a notice to the property owner. The Karnataka Municipal Act clearly says that the BBMP can send notices to private property owners in case of a health hazard,” Mr Aleem said. The NGO, Let’s Be the Change, had planned to paint the walls of the black spot after fencing.
Despite repeated calls, BBMP officials failed to respond.
