Kozhikode: No safety for cops too

It is hard to live in police quarters during rains.

KOZHIKODE/KANNUR: The policemen who take care of law and order in the city have to fear for the life of their families. The police quarters in the city, meant for the lower rung of the police force, is in a dilapidated condition . Though a new flat complex is being built, the finishing works have been delayed. Only a few will get a chance to live there as there are many new applicants, it is pointed out.

The top cops are not worried about the safety of the bottom line policemen, it is alleged.

The Kerala Police Association passed a resolution at its annual district conference urging the state government to take steps to complete the flat complex at Chintha-valappu for policemen. Though started in 2010, the construction is yet to be finished, the new district committee pointed out.

A policeman who preffered anonymity told DC that during rain it was hard to live in the dingy, leaking and unclean lanes. In many quarters, pipes are leaking and the drains from the toilets are in bad shape. “Though we have raised the issue many times in the past at many forums, there was no action,” he said. The works are progressing at a snail’s pace. Mainte-nance is essential even if a few shift to the new complex as new families can use the old ones, it was pointed out.

New office-bearers The general body elected Mr V.P. Pavithran (Kasaba police station) and Mr G.S. Sreejesh (control room) as president and secretary respectively of the organisation. Other office- bearers are vice-president, V. Shaji (Nada-kkavu); joint secretary, P.R. Ragheesh (city traffic); treasurer, M.G. Rajeev (district headquarters).
