Mithilapuri testifies growth of suburbs

Many residents in the colony bought plots for a mere Rs 1,000 decades ago.

Visakhapatnam: As the sun casts its first rays on the Mithalapuri Colony, the suburb slowly comes to life with pulsating bells from the nearby Ramalinga Swamy temple.

The streets start bustling with activity as people gather at the sub-registrar’s office and other government offices in the vicinity and surrounding supermarkets, banks, hotels and documentation offices.

At sunup, the roads get crowded with employees and students heading to their respective destinations.

If there is one suburb that is developed at par with upscale localities in the city, it is Mithilapuri Colony, located near Madhurawada. Boasting of good social infrastructure and civic amenities, it wears quite a model colony outlook.

Even though construction was initiated decades ago, the colony sprang into action in the last one decade after the IT firms, educational institutions and international cricket stadium forayed into nearby colonies.

On observing how the roads and infrastructure was developed on the city outskirts, the Mithilapuri Colony surely catches one's attention with its wide roads, a canopy of trees dotting the main road, good drainage system and other infrastructure.

V. Krishna Murthy, a retired government employee, explained how he settled down in the colony about three years ago though he purchased a plot there two decades ago. "The colony was accessible only by a kutcha road before construction of the national highway and it was mostly covered with mango orchards. There were several residents in the colony who bought their plots for a mere Rs 1,000," Mr. Krishna Murthy added.

L. Samuel, a resident of the colony, complained that street lighting was not provided in some lanes of the colony. He also complained about stray dogs.

“Due to a spurt in the real estate activity, the lands in the area have become prone to encroachments and several cases were also registered with the police in the last few years,” he added.
