TKM College of Engineering on mission to ensure power

The electrical engineering department is electrifying these damaged houses.

Kollam: The students and faculty members of TKM College of Engineering here are on a 'Mission Reconnect' to help the flood victims across the state. The electrical engineering students have devised alternative connection for power supply in 400 houses in the flood-affected areas of Pathanamthitta, Chenga-nnoor and Kuttanad. The electrical engineering department is electrifying these damaged houses.

The students led by Prof. Bijuna Kunju, head of the department, are producing power boards that include an isolator, earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB), lamp holder and three-pin sockets. The boards can be used as an alternative connection for the damaged electrical wirings.

“The students work in association with the ‘Mission Reconnect’ of the Kerala State Electricity Board Limited,” said principal S. Ayoob. The boards cost around '2000 per set.

The effort is endorsed by the KSEBL and the Kerala State Electrical Inspecto-rate. The alumni of the college have also donated '6 lakh to the venture by the KSEB. As many as 400 units of such devices will be manufactured by the students within four days under the department. These units will also be installed in the houses by the volunteers from the TKM college.
