Kozhikode: Children to be accountable
KOZHIKODE: The district administration has initiated serious efforts for the rehabilitation of 16 aged persons abandoned in the Beach Hospital, here, which came to limelight recently after media reports. The social justice department took over the protection and care of four of them while various other agencies have also evinced interest to look into their welfare.
Sub Judge M.P. Jayaraj who is also the secretary of District Legal Services Authority and district social welfare officer Aneetta S Lynn visited the hospital and interacted with the aged after a meeting held at the Collectorate in the presence of district collector U.V. Jose. The duo interacted with all the 16 abandoned elderly and listened to their woes and suggestions for rehabilitation.
The four persons whose treatments are over will be rehabilitated in the first phase. Babu, a native of Kannur will be rehabilitated at the old age home of the government whereas Ashok, a native of Karnataka will be housed in the home for the handicapped. Rama Swami and Baby Vinodini would be rehabilitated at the ‘Home of Love’, an NGO catering for the elderly, on October 1.
Durga Swami, a native of Andhra Pradesh and Raveendran, a native of Beypore will return home once the treatment is completed. Asiya, a native of Vadakara will return to the protection of children who expressed willingness to take care of the mother while Balakrishnan, another aged man will be looked after by a group of well-wishers. Others will be rehabilitated at oldage homes by the time their course of treatment is over, according to district administration.
Meanwhile RDO, Vadakara initiated legal measures against the family members of Kumaran, a native of Vadakara under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act- 2007. An order was issued to the son to ensure protection and care of the father, the district administration informed.
