Candidates who have applied for the post made a bee line at the corporation main office located in Town Hall to have their certificates verified and appear for the interview. The three day verification and interview process began on Wednesday. “On day one 2,600 applicants appeared and on the following day a little over 2,000 candidates appeared for the interview and had their certificates verified.” an official with the civic body familiar with the developments shared with DC.
Those who have completed SSLC are eligible to apply for the post. Candidates selected for the job will be paid a starting salary of Rs 17,500/-.
Commenting on the fact that over-qualified candidates have also applied for the post, Prince Gajendra Babu general secretary of State Platform for Common School System-Tamil Nadu (SPCC-TN) said “the government has not created enough jobs in the other sectors. Thus, whatever jobs the government is offering in any sector, the unemployed are applying for the post. A majority of over-qualified candidates applying for the post of 549 grade-1 sanitary worker is a sheer reflection of poverty and joblessness which is rampant.” he said.
Government norms will be adhered to while selecting candidates for the post, an official from the civic body said.
