Hyderabad: No respite from monkey menace

Hyderabad: The monkey menace continues in Hyderabad and Secunderabad though 344 monkeys were caught this year. To catch them, professionals from Uttar Pradesh were at the job in Hyderabad as no locals came forward for the job.

They got high-end equipment which helped to catch the monkeys from Padmaraonagar, Marredpally, Alwal, Yapral, Sanathnagar, Uppal, Tarnaka and other areas.

The GHMC has found that this year they have been able to catch monkeys and ensure that they do not come back. Monkeys have been caught singly and in groups. But does this mean an end to the monkey menace? No, they will come to the city as deforestation is driving them to city areas for food and water.

A senior official of the GHMC explained, “Monkeys are mostly seen in the city during the summer as they come looking for water and shade. Where there are huge and shade-giving trees in residential areas, they find a place for themselves. They are also found to live in defunct factories where they multiply and invade residential areas.”

These monkeys are left by the GHMC in forest areas and they hope that they will not come back. But some of them still find their way back to the city and places where they find abundant food and water.
