Scientists bat for Kerala Science Congress model across nation

Minister Aryadan Mohammed will inaugurate the valedictory ceremony.

Thenjippalam: As it enters to the final day on Saturday, the 28th edition of the Kerala Science Congress (KSC) has become a platform for students, teachers and young scientists from across the state to share their knowledge and research advancements with the eminent and senior scientists and experts from multi-disciplinary fields and also to get proper guidance.

Hailing the Kerala Science Congress, eminent scientists who have attended various sessions of the event, bat for similar events to be conducted in other states for moulding a better scientific youth in India.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, eminent astrophysicist and former director at Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune Prof Ajit K Kembhavi said that events like Science Congress would bring together people of all kinds and share knowledge and also make them enlightened to new understandings.

“I think it is very important to replicate events like Kerala Science Congress in other parts because it gives a new focus to our young scientists and students. The KSC is doing a good job in that regard,” he said. “It is also important to bring experts from outside to give talks and provide platform for participants to interact with them,” he added.

Kerala Biotechnology Commission Advisor Prof G.M Nair opined that the focal themes for the Science Congress create awareness on that particular subject and also to do more research on those subjects.

He added that the KSC is encouraging students to take up research seriously. “Students from Kerala have lot of talent and caliber, but they won’t come for quality research. The KSC aims at bridging that gap and make them understand PhD is not the only aim in a research,” he added.

“It is giving us a rare opportunity to understand what exactly research is, how a presentation to be done and what are the pathways we can opt in our future career,” opined Anju Sara Prakash, a PG student at Calicut University.

“It also helps teachers like me to better understand things and inculcate that knowledge to our students,” added Dr Sangeetha Kaimal, an assistant professor at Providence Women’s College, Kozhikode.

The ensemble of science buffs will come to an end on Saturday with a session on International Year of Pulses and Chilren’s Science Congress. Minister Aryadan Mohammed will inaugurate the valedictory ceremony.
