Chennai Corporation commences construction of Nadukuppam fishing market
Chennai: Residents of Nadukuppam who suffered livelihood loss due to the riots last Monday have some good news to cherish. A long pending project by Greater Chennai Corporation to construct a fishing market at this hamlet near Marina has commenced.
Against the residents' demand to construct 100 stalls, the corporation is only constructing 28 shops on a war footing, to hand it over to them within six months.
“Twenty-eight shops would be constructed in the area of 5,400 square feet.
Corporation capital fund of Rs 64 lakh is being used for this,” said a senior corporation official. The project, which is expected to be completed in 6 months, would benefit hundreds of fishermen.
“They are talking about the market. Who would pay for the destruction the police caused last Monday? Our nets were damaged and the livestock was burnt to ashes,” lamented Munusamy, a resident.
