Kerala: Second phase of street vendors' registration to begin on June 3
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The second phase of registration of street vendors across city will begin by June 3. The registrations are being carried out under the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NUML). Surveys conducted by the Kudumbasree along with the sociology department students of Karyavattom campus and Loyola College have listed 1,884 street vendors. Of these 347 were issued cards during the first phase.
Anjana M.S, assistant district mission director, Kudumbasree, said the survey included information on men women ratio, women and transgender vendors. “This was done to identify their specific requirements. The NULM initiative is to provide social security to them on the one hand and contribute to urban poverty alleviation programmes on the other,” she added.
A committee of Kudumbasree is assisting the corporation in the implementation.
“Apart from general traffic congestion issues there has been no report on street vendors occupying public spots other than those earmarked for the purpose,” said an official from the Corporation and added that if required exclusive vending zones would be created for vendors in future.
