Jangaonites make a point: Struggle for Jangaon district intensifies

People from all walks of life took to the roads to demand creation of Jangaon district.

Warangal: The struggle for Jangaon district has intensified. Students, teachers, housewives, sweepers, lorry drivers, lawyers and people from all walks of life took to the roads on Wednesday to demand creation of Jangaon district.

Unmindful of the scorching heat or rains, people have been taking to the streets for the past few months to send a message to the state government. They are questioning why Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao has failed to keep his promise of making Jangaon a district.

“Jangaon is suitable to be district headquarters. History suggests that there has been human habitation in Jangaon area since the mid-Neolithic period. It was also the capital of the Kalyani Chalukyas. Siddipet, Suryapet and Bhuvanagiri came under Jangaon division before they were made districts later.

Yadagirigutta town was maintained by the Ramalayam in Jeedikal. There are four main reservoirs in the Jangaon area. Jangaon experiences less rainfall than Rajasthan.

The state government wants to turn Jangaon into a small village. It will soon lose its prominence and become a desert,” said Reddy Ratnakar Reddy, a historian.

If the state government goes ahead with its plan to divide Jangaon into four, infrastructure would go waste. It will lose its identity as a revenue division. Offices of RDO, DSO, Court, DSP, police division etc, would go waste, he said.

Former TPCC president, Ponnala Lakshmaiah wondered why the Chief Minister, who said that the creation of districts would take place only after consent of the people, was ignoring Jangaon even as people are expressing their reluctance to be part of any other district.

“The CM himself said Jangaon has all natural resources and it is fit to be district headquarters. He is now failing to keep his promise. Because his son-in-law wants the reservoirs in Maddur, Bachannapet and Cherial, they are being included in Siddipet district. The CM and his daughter have accumulated large tracts of land near the Yadagirigutta. That is why Yadadri district was brought to the fore. Does the Chief Minister not care about public opinion?” he asked.
