Kukatpally residents facing civic apathy

Congested bad roads add to garbage, water woes.

Hyderabad: Despite having 7.56 lakh voters and being one of the highest property tax earners for the GHMC, Kukatpally, with its 200 colonies, sorely lacks civic infrastructure.

Though it was merged with the GHMC years ago, the area has the look of being maintained by a fund-starved gram panchayat. Three major projects that would help connectivity at Moosapet, Kaithalapur and Erragadda have been stopped half way here.

Mr Sambi Reddy, a resident and activist, said, “Damaged main roads and no interior roads are the prime concerns. Recarpeting was done during the 100-day action plan but it got washed away with the rains. Traffic gets choked every day. Alternative roads were proposed by the GHMC to avoid congested main roads but that plan was never executed.

“For the underground drainage system Rs 1,200 crore is needed to convert the old pipeline into standardised sewer lines. Door-to-door gar-bage collection is not done because there are not enough autorickshaws. The vulnerable dumping points have not been removed.”

Meanwhile repairs to the Ushamullapudi road is going slowly. The division does not have service roads. The side roads are in a bad conditions. Hawkers have erected permanent structures on the main roads. No enforcement mechanism exists.

Be it garbage collection or dumping, stray dog menace, pollution from the industries at Balanagar or damaged roads, residents here have to weather it all. “A truckload of garbage and dust has accumulated near the main gate of the Syndicate Bank Officers’ Colony, Dubaigate that has not been removed for more than a year,” said Mr P. Janardhan Reddy, a local resident.

Ms S. Deepthi of HMT Sathavahana Nagar added, “The drain line is broken and water mixes with the Manjeera pipeline; we are unable to drink the water though we pay monthly bills.”
