Koraput: A large number of British era live bullets were on Friday recovered from a septic tank behind Koraput District Industry Centre (DIC) at Jeypore town in Koraput district.
According to sources, nearly 1,000 bullets were reportedly dumped inside the septic tank packed in a plastic box.
“We received information about it on Thursday evening. The septic tank belongs to the DIC office. As the tank is left unused, a local traced the bullets while he was fishing in the tank. After he informed us, the place was guarded and we started the recovery work today with the help of fire department,” said additional superintendent of police (ASP) Prabhat Kumar Pradhan.
“As per the seal mark on the bullets it is believed to be of British era. According to law, one can keep only few number of such bullets privately. Hence, some unidentified person may have dumped the huge number of bullets here,” Mr Pradhan further added.
The ASP said efforts were on to pump out the outer from the septic tank so that more bullets, if any, can be recovered from the tank.
The police also suspects that the recovered bullets could have been portions of the ammunition robbed from the local Jeypore palace 30 years ago.
“Investigation into the matter is on and forensic examination of the bullets will be conducted,” the ASP said.
All the recovered bullets have written ‘Manchester’ and ‘Made in London’ on them.
